Monday / Tuesday December 4/ 5 posting your news stories

Part 2 of posting your news story.

Below you will find all the news stories that I received by 5 am this morning. If you did not post, but shared a story via docs, please post now. They have been checked in, and cursorily read, but are not graded. I'll get to that part this evening. Any not there by 4 pm will be worth only 50 points.

In class today: please read over the news stories. Select 8 of the stories that particularly caught your attention.  Write the headline, followed by a positive, well-articulated comment. Post these....with your name, if you intend to get credit- at the end of the blog. I suggest you create a word document, and then post one time. Do not send them to me! These are due at the end of class today, with the exception of those who receive extended time.
There is no additional class time for the news unit.

New unit tomorrow: satire, because your pen shall heal, not hurt. (paraphrased from LL Montgomery)
**************************************************************************
Material from Monday
Please post your news stories by midnight on the blog.
I strongly suggest you let a peer look over your story before posting.

Review this checklist before posting:

Are the most important and recent facts first?

Is the story accurate? Are the sources identified fully?

Are the paragraphs short?

Is the sentence structure varied in the story?

Is the story neat and double-spaced so that it is easy to read?

Does your story flow? Did you use the transition/ quote formula?

 Did you use active voice?

Unbiased?

At least one attributed quote?

headline?  (covered in the reading last week)

secondary headline? (covered in the reading last week)

by line? (that's your name)

correct punctuation / grammar?

Here's the grading rubric again:

Ace reporter
Good
Fair
Poor

This story — so professional one would think it were cut from a professional news publication — convincingly demonstrates mastery of the inverted pyramid form by doing the following:

with precision, arranges the key facts of the story from most important to least important

relegates background information — information the writer could have known before the event — to a place below all new information

 is devoid of unattributed opinion

artfully illustrates points with interesting, well-punctuated and well-attributed quotations; a transition is used to introduce each quotation.

is a model of brevity, using few words to maximum effect.

avoids passive voice except in the rare cases when it is merited

shows few, if any, errors in the conventions of written English

This solid inverted pyramid story, while not as impressive as that written by the Ace Reporter, consistently does most or all of the following:

arranges the key facts of the story from most important to least important

generally relegates background information — information the writer could have known before the event — to a place below all new information

 is devoid of unattributed opinion

illustrates points with interesting, well-punctuated and well-attributed quotations; a transition is used to introduce each quotation

is for the most part concise

generally avoids passive voice except in the rare cases when it is merited

shows few, if any, errors in the conventions of written English.

This story suggests general awareness of the requirements for an inverted pyramid story, but does not suggest great prowess in meeting those requirements. This lead does much or all of the following:

unconvincingly arranges the facts of the story from most important to least important

in some cases, fails to keep background information in its place at the bottom of the story

 may include minor unattributed opinion

sometimes illustrates points with quotations but may do so awkwardly and without adequate transitions or

shows too little attention to the need for brevity

 may slip into passive voice

shows some errors in the conventions of written English.

These story doesn’t meaningfully address the assignment. This lead does much or all of the following:

either does not have all the basic facts or shows clear errors in organizing them from most to least important

fails to keep background information in its place at the bottom of the story

is bereft of meaningful, supportive quotations; may fail to introduce quotations at all

 includes significant unattributed opinion

noticeable over-use of the passive voice

 is wordy

shows multiple errors in the conventions of written English.

(Note: The fact that a person is speaking to students is not in and of itself newsworthy; stories should focus on what a person says, not the fact that he/she has spoken.)

  1. Politics’ Power To Make Or Break Dinner
    Talking Politics At The Table

Politics has always been discussed but now more than ever, it is part of everyday conversation. There is currently a great political divide in the country and talking politics at the table can either lead to great discussions over dinner or spoil the night.
There are many different attitudes towards politics at the table. Most just want to have a nice dinner and depending on the family, politics can be a invigorating debate or tear the dinner apart.
Some believe politics can be a great way to discuss different beliefs and get everyone engaged while they are together.
“Politics are really relevant in our lives right now,” Kyra Majewski, a senior at School of the Arts says. “It’s something that should be discussed and everyone gets to share their opinions. It also weeds out the family members that won’t receive Christmas gifts.”
However, politics can become heated and differences in opinion might be too hard for some to handle during a meal.
“I don’t like politics at the table, it leads to too much bickering,” Piper Van Kerkhove, another senior says. “In my family we just avoid politics which is best because my parents get really annoying.”
Many people find talking about politics to be frustrating and stressful and do not want to bring stress to dinner. Some wish to focus on safe topics so no one will feel offended.
Discussing politics at the table is a personal preference and the whether you enjoy debating the latest political issues, the most important thing is to enjoy the food and company.

Are Video games making the next generation of gamblers?

In many new games lives a system of pay to win. Players, sometimes children, are being prompted to buy achievements rather than earning them.

This problem has been recently brought to light by the new Star Wars Battlefront 2, a game by the large corporation EA, which introduced a system that actually required players to spend money to be better than other players. In this game a player can purchase a “loot box” which may contain power ups to aid their character. “You buy a sixty dollar game, but you only get to play half of this game the rest you have to buy” stated Wyatt Lowe during our interview.

Systems like these have the potential to take advantage of those who are genetically predisposed to gambling. A 19 year old recently divulged his addiction to micro transactions in an online forum, saying that, at age 14, he spent over ten thousand dollars on in game purchases, he blames this on his own gambling addiction, and the inclusion of these systems. In addition an anonymous source that i interviewed had this to say “they’re like drugs, i’m addicted”.

Other countries have already made moves to stop major companies, like EA, from allowing gambling within their games. The Belgian Gaming Commission has launched an investigation into the validity of these transactions and have found that these transactions are considered gambling and shouldn't be allowed.

However the only changes being done in the U.S. have come from gamers themselves protesting these major companies. This alone however won’t lead to major change, and unfortunately if moves aren't made by the U.S. government this generation of gamers might become the next generation of gamblers.

  3. Students stressed out over Graduation

Many students look forward to senior year for a couple reasons. Senior year is your last year in high school but it’s also the year that you’ll prepare yourself for college. There’s different types of seniors in high school. Some seniors are having the best time of their lives but some are struggling and stressing over everything. Being a senior is fun but it can be harder than you thought because of all the things that you have to accomplish before graduation.
Graduating is obviously the main goal students have but there’s so many things you have to do to actually graduate. College applications is one the things that you have to worry about because a lot of the applications have due dates which builds pressure. Not only do you have to do essays and make sure everything is all set for the applications, there are fees. Senior year is expensive. You have to pay for your cap and gown, pay for senior pictures, and pay for the Yearbook. Some stress about Prom as well since they have to pay for their dress or suit and the tickets.
Who said senior year was going to be easy? You have to work very hard and not only that, you have be a good role model for the young ones. “ It’s very stressful and super expensive but overall i’m looked up to by many people. It’s nice being a leader in school.” Nye’Asia Simmons commented. Being a senior can strain you but it's worth it because everything that you do is for a reason. “Do your homework, stay positive, and don’t let anyone stop you from your goals.” was her advice to the upcoming seniors.
Work assignments also overwhelm us. You have to do your work in order to pass your classes or you won’t be able to graduate. Some students have it easy but some take AP classes which is harder. “Stress. I thought that applying to colleges was going to be easier. I have to take the SAT and it’s just a lot harder than i thought it was going to be. I thought I just had to show up. They still challenge you.” Gustin Cook stated.
Even though senior year can be stressful and challenging, it’s a rewarding time in your life. You only have one senior year so you better make the best of it. Make it a memorable one.

Over 3.2 million students are victims of Bullying. People skip school because of bullying. Some even commit suicide because they can't take the pain or it's too much of a strain so they would rather be gone from this world. Bullying can be verbal or physical. People cyber bully or even socially bully. Studies say that 77 percent of students are bullied mentally physically and verbally. More now than ever bullying has been a big problem it is our duty as a people to get these things to end.
When talking to my peers i asked have anyone ever been bullied or seen someone who has.
One student i talked to said she thinks it disgusting and that those people who bully people have something insecure within themselves. Another student that i talked to said it's not a good thing to do and he has seen bullying usually with the younger kids.
It made him feel uncomfortable and upset. When listening to everyones opinions about the way we feel about bullying i thought on ways where we can help people to stop bullying and help the people who are getting bullied. By not only saying stop but by taking a stand and saying no we will not stand for this. the average bullying episode lasts only 37 seconds.
In other countries such a sweden and germany bullying is way lower than the U.S. Teachers notice or intervene in only one in 25 incidents. Bullying is no joke and a person i feel that it is unnecessary and ignorant. Lets stop bullying and come together as a unity because no one life is worth being taken away there has been to many incidents with this let's stop and make a change.

Hungry students angry about restricted vending machines

Rochester, NY’s city school, School of the Arts has undergone an epidemic of hungry teens this school year. It wasn’t until last month that the school’s vending machines have been closed and unusable until dismissal, promptly at 2:30pm.

Students have been outraged by the sudden disruption in their day to day school lives. “Whoever thought of the idea is being cheap and negatively impacting hungry students…” says Theatre Technology major Jordan Majors, who is going on his 6th year at SOTA.

The vending machines have provided bottles of water, juices, candy, chips, salads and other snacks for the students for as little as 65 cents, helping appease hungry bellies and serve as an alternative to the provided school lunches, “I think it’s crazy! Like they already know that most of us won’t even touch the food that they serve us...now they have children starving throughout the entire school day.” says SOTA senior Vice President Tay’Von Jackson. Reportedly, there are kids who have to wait until 1:00pm to eat lunch; 5 and a half hours later into their school day without available snacks.

The switch in schedule for the vending machines was district ordered, meaning multitudes of other Rochester city school students may just be experiencing the same issues. It is unsure how long the vending machines are to be restricted or if it is in any way temporary, but nonetheless students are making due. Time will tell whether the apparent disapproval by the student body will ignite any change in order.

  6. The Ugly Side of Senior Year
    By Kevin Rosario

For some students senior year is the pinnacle, and most blissful year of their high school experience. For the rest of the students it is the most stress they have ever experienced.

A study done recently by New York University, researched 128 seniors. 49% almost half surveyed felt a great deal of pressure. Nadia Nadal commented, ”B***hhhh, M***********g senior year has been one of my most toughest years ever.” Something that all can agree on is that most of this stress is attributed to a combination of college applications, homework, senior projects, SATs and ACTs, jobs, extracurriculars, parents, friends and lack of sleep.

A majority of students felt they were ill prepared for senior year as if all they have been doing is preparing for the next part of their respective lives. Students I interviewed said they would advise themselves to “Prepare yourself do what you have to do and stay on top of tasks” Anessa Gonzalez said she would’ve “started looking into colleges earlier.”

It seems as if all we do is students is to prepare for what’s next in life and that after even 12 years of school we still can’t catch a break and relax. Although now more than ever the finish line is on the horizon, just to start a new race and chapter.

  7. Not cracking under pressure
High school student facing pressure to conform to social norms every day
    By: Piper Van Kerkhove
ROCHESTER, NY-- In high school students face increasing pressure to conform to societal norms, the effects of which can go unseen.
The pressure comes from both peers, and from social media constantly viewed by teens. The pressure can be both good and bad.
Students were asked if they conform to the pressures they feel coming from friends and media, both responded yes. They didn’t see the pressures as always being negative, but if it would result in emotional or physical pain then it had gone too far. Agreeing with the political views of her group of friends is one example given by a SOTA senior.
People are willing to follow what the people around them do because of the human need to be part of a group, according to Crash Course Psychology. A study by psychologist Solomon Asch in 1951 showed that people will change perceptions of reality to conform to a group, when recently repeated the results were almost identical. Groups create pressure that will affect the way people act.
In some cases this can be positive, such as pressure to do well in school. Pressure to change oneself in a form that in harmful however is a negative pressure. Social media projecting images of a “perfect” person can lead to someone feeling they need to change themselves, and in some cases leads people to self harm. “I follow to a point,” is the mentality of a SOTA senior, a mentality taken by many people aware of societal pressure.
High school students are always self conscious, making them vulnerable to peer pressure. It is important to ensure that this doesn’t cause them harm.

  8. Older Sibling Pressures

Older siblings seem to face many obstacles with ease while the younger siblings are stuck wondering if they will ever amount to much.
In families there are certain pecking orders between the siblings; the oldest sibling is usually the one who is blamed for everything and thought highly of, the middle sibling(s) is just kind of there living life and somewhat following their older sibling or not caring at all, and last but not least there is the younger sibling. The younger sibling is usually the most pampered and is also the “light of your parents lives”. The younger sibling seems to rule the house and will ultimately almost always seem to get their own way, but the part we don’t often see is where the younger siblings struggle with the expectations set by the oldest sibling.
After asking several people questions about their older siblings most answers were very similar. “My sibling just seemed so perfect that it felt as though every mistake that I made was magnified to the extreme. However, since we are both out of high school the pressure has shifted from how high my GPA is to how well I handle “adult” life and living on my own.” one person said when asked about the pressures of having an older sibling.
After getting similar answers from seven other people I then asked, “Do you ever see your older sibling struggling? If so, with what.” to which one person answered “Over time I witnessed how much pressure my sister put herself under. Ironically, she always felt as if I was the naturally smarter and charismatic sibling and felt as though she had to work harder just to get half of the results that I did...she also sees herself as third parent for me and whenever I make a mistake takes it on as if it is her fault.”
So in the end, the older siblings may be seemingly putting out standards for the younger siblings to follow but they are also faced with the pressures of measuring up to you and if you’re good enough. It’s easier to just put aside this age long competition of amounting to something and just enjoy the time you have with your family.

  10. SOTA Seniors Stress Over College Applications
    By Kyra Majewski

ROCHESTER, NEW YORK— Seniors at School of the Arts scramble to finish college applications as deadlines approach.

Many students are frantically working to complete the requirements for college admission. Teachers are overrun with applicants requesting them to read over their essays or provide recommendations as the weeks pass. Although they have had months to prepare, many students have left the majority of the work for the final few weeks. Nearly every college applicant within the SOTA senior student body has been plagued with stress. Some have attributed the pressure to a lack of preparation for the application process within academic classes.

“I wish they would dedicate more time for college in our classes,” senior Sophia Hammond said. “It would have prepared us better.” Many agree with Sophia, anticipating some amount of class time dedicated to furthering the college application process for students. Not even the top of the class is immune to the stress.

“When people ask about college, I literally want to punch them,” valedictorian Alexander Christie said. With everyone asking about where you’re going, what you’re doing, and if you’re applied, it causes a lot of tension which could be eased with a bigger focus on college in classrooms.

Counselors and other dedicated teachers go out of their way to help students prepare for the next step of their life, but many seniors are still left to figure things out on their own, especially regarding the particular steps in the application process. Although certain periods are set aside to get students on track for applying, most of the stress and pressure that accompanies being a senior can be avoided with a little more focus and preparation within the classroom.

  11. Pros and cons of vaccines for kids
    by Claudia Nizzica

The Centers for Disease Control recommends getting 29 doses of 9 vaccines for kids aged 0 to 6, even if every state requires certain vaccination, some of them allow medical, religious and philosophical exemptions. One of the most important characteristic of the vaccination is the herd immunity that is an indirect protection from a disease when, in a large population that has become immune, even the individuals that are not immune have a protection from the illness. It’s in the 1000 AD that we have the first techniques of vaccinations by the Chinese to combat Smallpox, but it’s only in the 1796 that we have the first big step of the history of vaccines. Edward Jenner, an English physician and scientist, noticed that the milkers who contracted the bovine Smallpox (a really light type of Smallpox) never contracted the human Smallpox, so he tried to inject in an 8 year old child the material from a pustule of bovine Smallpox and he never developed the disease. After 100 years, Louis Pasteur proved that in order to create immunity from a disease we could use altered microbial preparations (spinal cord of rabbits infected by Rabies and heated Anthrax bacilli). The town of Milton (MA) became, in 1089, the first US town to offer Smallpox vaccinations for free and thanks to this we have the first state law that required the vaccination of persons over the age of 21 against Smallpox. The National Vaccine Agency was created when the President James Madison signed into law an act to encourage vaccination. After 42 years, Massachusetts passed the first law that required the immunization for schoolchildren, it was followed by other states and in 115 years 29 states would require vaccinations to attend a public school. But in 1878 the National Anti-Compulsory Vaccination Reporter stated that the illnesses caused by the vaccinations were a “greater evil to humanity” than Smallpox itself. After that a lot of League were created (like the Anti-Vaccination Society of America, the New England Anti-Compulsory Vaccination League and the Anti-Vaccination League of New York City), and this is where the debate started…

    Pro arguments
According to Shot@Life, 285 children are saved by vaccines every hour. Between 1994 and 2014, 732,000 American children were saved from death and 322 million cases of childhood illnesses were prevented. As we said before, we have a herd immunity that can help kids that can’t have a vaccinations because of an immune system disorder. Not only this kids are saved, but even the future generations, because if we can eradicate a disease now they will not have this problem.
Every major medical organizations state that vaccines are some of the safest medical products available. It is true that inside a vaccine we can find aluminum, thimerosal and formaldehyde but they are harmful just in large doses. Inside a vaccine the dose of this ingredients are so small that makes them really safe, even because kids are always exposed to this thing, such as aluminum in breast milk.

    Con arguments
Even if the CDC said that the vaccines are safe we still have a risk of anaphylaxis in one per million kids. The vaccination for a rotavirus can cause a type of bowel blockage. DTaP and MMR vaccines are also associated with Long-term seizures, coma, lowered consciousness, and permanent brain damage even if it’s so rare that we can’t define the cause. The CDC reports that other vaccines can cause serious effects such as learning disabilities, asthma, autism, diabetes, chronic inflammation, and other disabilities.
Some of these effects are related to the ingredients inside the vaccines, like organic mercury compound found in flu vaccines. Some examples of harmful ingredients are cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and 2-phenoxyethanol that are skin and eye irritant and the 2-phenoxyethanol can even cause headache, shock, convulsions, kidney damage, cardiac and kidney failure, and death.

  12. LIVING IN YOUR SIBLING’S SHADOW
    By: Barlin Osman
    December 3, 2017

Being the only child gives you the luxury of not being compared to your siblings. You’d be surprised how many children are forced to endure the stress that builds off the pressure they feel from their parents, teachers, and maybe even themselves.

Clayton Hoskins, fifth child of six, shared with us that he, “hates when people think we all share the same interests.” Before anyone ever takes the time to get to know you, you’re automatically defined by your sibling and their actions. It is up to you to either keep up the reputation or work to prove to them you and your sibling are entirely different people.

When a teacher takes roll call and as soon as they get to your name, they look up and ask, “Are you ______’s brother/sister?” They don’t realize the pressure they usually put on students by asking that “simple” question. Thoughts like, “they expect me to already be like my older sibling and I’m afraid of letting them down,” or “bet you I can get a higher grade in this class than you did!” Begin to run through the student’s mind, causing them to worry more than they should be.

In most cases, students use their sibling’s success and achievements as a motive to challenge themselves to prove they are capable of doing the things their sibling has done or something ever greater. My youngest brother, Abdi, admitted to me, “watching you receive awards at swim meets that we both participated in led me to develop a stronger commitment to swimming and eventually earn an award.” He said he’s never been so proud of himself after all the hard work paid off.

Clayton also mentioned, “my older brother was a part of the school band so my mother put me in band before I even got a chance to tell her that’s not what I want to do. She already had this great plan set out for me: I was going to be their star player. I didn’t know how to tell her playing in the school band was the least of my interests.” Clayton practiced hard anyway to please his mother and prove to her that he’s just as good as his brother even though his talents aren’t found in this field.

Having your path in life already paved for you by a sibling can be frustrating. The hardest fight is trying to disregard the pressure from people around you-- especially yourself because you want to be at least comparable to your sibling. Finally measuring up to them, though, is an indescribable feeling.

Media to blame for teens negative body image

    By: JaVanse’ Ryland-Buntley

The media and pop. culture have always played a role in how people view their looks. Now more than ever, teenagers are feeling pressured to look a certain way due to the people they are seeing in the limelight.

This sudden surge of social media and reality t.v. full of filters, photoshop, and plastic surgery are impacting the way teens are viewing their own bodies. “Just look at the Kardashians, they are making people feel like they have to have this perfect body,” Jocelyn Brillion, a senior at School of the Arts has stated. According to NEDA, National Eating Disorder Association, “there is no single cause of body dissatisfaction [...] but research is increasingly clear that media does indeed contribute and that exposure to and pressure exerted by media increases body dissatisfaction.”

71% of teenagers have reported that the media has caused them to form a negative perception of their bodies. Considering that only a few body types are positively represented in media, it’s clear that those who don’t fall into those categories begin to look at their bodies in a different, more critical manner. At the current rate of social media and pop. culture, there will be a likely rise in the percentage of those dealing with a negative view of their body.

  14. Students discuss ways to bring change for LGBT+ communities
    by Katelyn Jimenez
    December 4 2017

Many students ranging from middle school age to even college age struggle to find communities accepting and supportive of them. Millions of students mill through their daily lives searching for someone to confide in, yet struggle to do just that.
Here at School of the Arts, it is very different. Based on a recent poll, about 80% of students at SOTA are comfortable with talking about their sexualities. Among that large percent is senior, Lily Ni, who agrees that SOTA carries a very different environment to other schools.”Students have a voice here. It allows exposure to those who have never had a discussion about it,” said Ni.
Other schools can’t say the same about their LGBT+ communities.. “If you go to a school like East, LGBT+ people are usually the butt of the joke,” stated Tamaron McKnight, another senior at School of the Arts. Nobody really thinks about the things that they do or say that can hurt those kids. Which is why the the discussions are really important for schools to start having as options or even classes for students.
Jocelyn Brillian, a senior, agrees that “The least we can do is protect them and support them.” Though many of these kids may not want protection, support is a very important factor to help them grow and become comfortable with themselves and others. Support being given by peers starts with schools making the change to help bring a bigger change to communities.

  15. Bag Checking After Lunch Leaves Students Frustrated

When does scanning get to be too much?

    By Carina Giannini

School of the Arts has a policy to help curb students trying to sneak food or drinks in after their lunch— you either leave your bag in the entryway, or an administrator has to check your bag to make sure nothing is being snuck in. This could mean either opening your bag for a manual inspection, in which the administrators paw through a student’s belongings, or the bag has to go through the bag scanner. More often than not, however, it is done the manual way.

Students, on the whole, don't like this practice. “It makes me late,” complained Kyra Majewski, grade 12, “And it’s easy to scam anyway.”

Another SOTA student, who declined to be identified, agreed, “It's stupid. Don't take my sub, bitch.”

So why is this practice in place, if it is so disliked throughout the students? Administrators feel differently. They believe these policies are needed in order to keep kids from sneaking in food and drinks they aren't allowed to have in the classroom. But how effective are these measures? Most students said they could sneak food past the administrators whenever they wanted, and that the real problem was the fact that bag scanning slowed them down and displayed a lack of trust from the teachers, without making much of an effect on what students brought in to school.

Other schools don't have this policy, either. When asked about it, students from other (suburban) schools displayed shock or annoyance even thinking about it. “That's really annoying. I feel like that just would take too much time,” says Brenna McKane, a recent graduate from Webster Thomas. Webster Thomas has no policy for checking the bags of returning students, and neither does Penfield, Brighton, Charles Finney, or Pittsford Mendon— which were all the places that the students interviewed went to school.

So should School of the Arts remove their bag check-in policy, and place trust back in the students? Or should students have to learn the hard way what they are and are not allowed to have in the classroom?

  17. Celtics thrive despite Hayward injury
Boston manages to win 16 straight
    By: Michael J. Zona

Just five minutes into the NBA season, the Boston Celtics lost their star free agent signing in Gordon Hayward; to a fractured leg. 18 games later the Celtics have won 16 straight, the 5th best streak in franchise history.

During the unlikely win streak, the Celtics rookie Jayson Tatum started all 16 games with Hayward out for the season. Forward Jayson Tatum averaged 13.8 points per game, leading all rookies. And point guard Kyrie Irving led the team with 23.2 points per game.

So, what helped boost the Celtics during this stretch? "Kyrie Irving. I think because of his motivation to be the best on that team and an actual super star, its increasing his momentum and its spread onto the team." Kyrie Irving has had to prove he can be the number one man on a team after demanding a trade from Clevland Cavaliers. This determination to be the star of a team helped Kyrie lead the team to victory.

Boston has played with the best defensive rating and the least amount of points per game during this 16-game stretch. "Boston is loaded with defensive power. Brown, Tatum, Horford, and Smart are a solid defensive base". And in the NBA defense wins championships.

  18. FCC Repeals Net Neutrality
    What This Means for You
    By Quamae Newsome
    Dec. 4 2017

The FCC is repealing Net Neutrality, opening the internet for ISP’s to regulate themselves.

The mentality is, the removal of net neutrality wouldn’t dismantle the entire internet, rather it will provide a better ground for a free market, because as of now there are three big Internet Service Providers: AT&T, Verizon, and Comcast. With net neutrality gone the ISP’s can provide the consumer improved technology and better service without being disrupted by government intervention.

There’s an enormous amount of backlash at Ajit Pai, Chair of the FCC, and his decision to remove Net Neutrality. 66% of people seem uninformed, or simply uninterested.

“It should be there but it’s not. It gives cable companies the chance to go rogue, but like I said, I don’t care.” said a student interviewed.

30% are in favor of regulations fearing without them the ISP’s can and will take advantage. Throttling the internet speed, and offering limited access to sections of internet, much like current cable companies.

The issue lies in people’s lack of trust. Ajit Pai seems on the consumer side and has maintained that sentiment for the past two years.

“The solution is not more regulations, the problem was this was slapping on more regulations.” said Ajit Pai, when interviewed two years ago.

Pai isn’t trying to make anyone but the large companies happy, and It is up to the public to express concern. Many have taken to calling their congressmen, and directly lobbying against the repeal. This is the most we as a collective can do until the final verdict is placed.

With all the backlash and drama surrounding the event it is unlikely that anything will pass, and If so, Internet providers would be hard-pressed to change the status of the internet.

  19. Cultural appreciation or appropriation?
    By Giorgia Moretti

Cultural appropriation has been a problem for centuries; however, it has become a more prevalent issue in the past few years, as celebrities and other famous figures have been appropriating other cultures. Teens, especially those on social networks such as Tumblr and Twitter, have started calling out such acts of cultural appropriation. They are typically accurate in what they consider to be cultural appropriation and recognize that our world being a “melting pot” does not entitle Westerners to adopt other cultures as they please, even if minorities choose to adopt a more Western culture.

Most of the problem lies in the fact that the exchange of cultural values between Caucasians and minorities (or otherwise mocked or oppressed cultures) isn’t equal. Many people believe that if a person belonging to a minority steps away from their culture and adorns modern, Western clothing, then they are entitled to step away from their clothing and adorn the minority’s traditional clothing.
As Jarune Uwujaren writes, “Just because Indian Americans wear business suits doesn’t mean all Americans own bindis and saris. Just because some black Americans straighten their hair doesn’t mean all Americans own dreadlocks.” She also says that, “The fact is, Western culture invites and, at times, demands assimilation. Not every culture has chosen to open itself up to being adopted by outsiders in the same way.”

Most of the time, it is not a person of color’s choice to adopt a Western culture. They are forced to do so because traditional customs are deemed to be “unprofessional” in our society. If all traditional customs and values were given the same amount of respect, cultural appropriation would not be an issue, as there would be no majority to deem what kind of lifestyle is normal or not, and there would be no minorities that would be forced to conform to these standards.

Appropriating someone’s culture isn’t a conscious decision. Nobody wakes up and says, “Oh! Today I’m going to steal a minority’s clothing and customs and reduce things that they value into pop-culture “trash”.” In fact, many people believe that they’re respecting other cultures when they wear a minority’s clothing or perform a certain ritual because cultural appropriation is so deeply embedded in our lives.

  21. People addicted to technology may lose connection to real life
    Positive substitutes for going online
    By Darla Boczek

No one seems to go a day without technology, it is a progressive tool that infiltrates every crease in our life. It is helpful and saves time, but can also be detrimental if overused.

Technology can sharpen our knowledge, we can find almost any answer in a click of a button. We can talk to whomever we want in the world, listen to music, learn a new language, and find creative tutorials; all things that can enrich our lives.

Researchers say, though, there is a problem when technology crosses a line, and takes over someone's life. Too many hours spent can lead to physiological issues, or slowly heighten them. Anxiety, depression, antisocial behavior, and addiction can all be linked with over usage, just to name a few.

An article brings out another point, in which,“people are more likely to say things online that they wouldn’t say in person”, giving more opportunities for bullying in the comfort of one's home.
Phones can make it easier to isolate oneself from surrounding people, and the environment. To prevent this, self control and time management can be used while on the internet to refrain from going overboard, and developing an unhealthy routine.

Ideas to limit usage call for swapping bad habits and exchanging them with good ones.
Being in the outdoors, exercising, studying, and spending more quality time with family
are all beneficial activities one could possibly add to their routine if not already done so.

The possibilities are endless. You could make your own recipe for a new dish, and if it turns out to be nasty, you can serve it to your enemies. Paint anything; your nails, your house, a canvas or your pet. Go to libraries and plays and pretend you are from a different decade. Dress up to make yourself unrecognizable, and then talk to strangers.

Some may want to learn how to play a new sport, instrument, or learn something they believe they would dislike, but it could test their comfort zone. Writing feelings down in a book or crying in a deliciously scented rose petaled bath can be soothing to others.

Limited use of technology can open doors for creative learning, and can create more individualism. Friends and family they choose to be close to can influence them, rather than strangers on the web.

  22. Smartphones, the 21st century epidemic
    Ingrid Diaz

Citizens in the city of Rochester believe that their cellphones have prevented them from being the most efficient with their time.

Phones have become such an epidemic that thousands and thousands of research has been formulated to prove the true effect of them. Some of those studies have involved cancer because of cellphone use. “(WHO) classifies cell phone radiation as a “possible human carcinogen” due to an increased risk of brain cancer from long-term and heavy use of cellphones.” The reason behind this type of research is that more than 90% of the world owns a phone, proving them as extremely important in today's generation. Phones have become the reasons for disease and headaches, but for some reason, they’re still the most useful and needed piece of technology. Since phones have become such a large deal, it is important to get into the community and be hands on with this matter.

The School of the Arts(SOTA) is a school specially for skilled and talented students located in the Rochester City School district. As a part of research, a selected group was asked about the pros and cons regarding cellphone use. These were their answers…

“People spend too much time on their phones and rely on the too much” Said SOTA student, Shayla Brown.
According to recent research, teens spend about four hours a day on their phones, which adds up to more than 100 hours a month! 100 hrs that can be used for studying...

Mr. Wilson, a teacher at SOTA also said that “Phones are very important to have to stay connected. But people have become addicted, it distracts people when they’re driving and when they’re in classrooms. These days people go on dates and all they can focus on is their phones.” Mr. Wilson also says that he sees the phone addiction on the daily which disrupts students’ focus.

Hundreds of studies have proven that “The ability to multitask with a cellphone is an illusion. With a phone in front of them, students' thinking is fragmented, as is all their work.” A 30+ yr educator tested his students ability to stay away from phones, time after time they fail. Their phones in their backpacks only lead them to wonder what’s going on in the blinking screen.

A SOTA senior, Barlin Osman chimed in and said “Phones are very efficient on informing people about what's going on in the world, but they have also been very negative. Instead of doing homework or reading, children are getting distracted and failing classes. I’ve been here for years, and even with the phone use rule, it still happens.”

Studies have shown that even in schools that have a no-phones-in-class rule, 65% of students still send and receive messages. The addiction regarding phones only continues to grow since even in schools that completely ban phone use have 58% of students sending or receiving texts during class time.

These citizens have full experience with the life of phones. They have been around since flip phones, therefore they have tested out and felt what life is with different types of phones. Throughout this century, phones have evolved from just calls, to being in charge of keeping our lives in order.

Phones have been major distractions and some people don’t use them for information, but for social media and drama. Phones have caused the world to shut their eyes towards big problems and to intentionally ignore the world behind a screen.

From distributing information to illnesses, phones still seem to engrave themselves in everyone's life.

  23. (((((( PART TWO DARLA BOCZEK)))))) --sorry i wrote too much it wouldnt let me publish it all at once so i broke it down
    .......
    .......
Jordan, a high school student, says, “I would read a book and try to under, tati why are you staring at me? And try to understand more things about the world”, when asked what he would do for entertainment in a day without technology.

Francheska, a teenage artist, shares her thoughts on what she would do in this scenario as well. “i would draw, maybe i'd go outside, play my instrument the guitar, and sing!”

Some say they simply go on their phone when everyone else is, because they will be bored without doing so. Communication, though, is important while building friendships, and being on the phone too long, while with them in person, can cause a disconnect.

One man clearly traumatized by the thought of no technology, exclaims, “I don't know, i’d probably cry first, I would probably run 24 hours a day, a marathon or something, something useful. I’d be useful to society, otherwise i am bum! Staying home playing on computer, i'm not human being, i'm a robot! What a question, opened my eyes! Unbelievable!”

Some individuals find that setting a timer, breaking up their goals, and then rewarding themselves with something small, can help them have a more efficient day.

Certain jobs and activities are solely based on computers and it's programs. A software developer earns well over 100 grand a year. Also there is a variety of learning devices made for students in school, such as smartboards, which catch children's interest more so than messy notes on a chalkboard.

In the workplace and schools technology can also be a distraction from getting priorities done. Anessa, a senior at School of the Arts, says if she did not have so much access to the web, she would, “hang out with my friends and actually do homework”.

Too much of anything is not a good thing, showing balance needs to be created.

  24. Part time Job or full time catch-up
    By Michael Sepulveda

In a day and age where school has only gotten harder and stress levels for teenagers are at an all time high, parents struggle with the idea of letting their kids work part time jobs.
There are many pros to working part time jobs while in High school. They range from receiving Knowledge in finance and how to manage their money to earning experience and meeting people
they might otherwise never have the opportunity to meet.

Nothing is as perfect as it seems though, the workplace can be just as ruthless as high school or even more so. We live in a world that has become more career and competition driven. Parents telling their kids to focus on school work and keeping their grades up while schools are telling teens to have a well rounded “Brag Sheet”.. Working a part time job shows that you are dedicated and can multitask while still keeping your grades at A+. Having an astounding Amount of community service ours shows you care about your community, even though at this day and age they are mandatory. Some people take up extracurriculars on top of that like Playing an instrument that teaches discipline like the piano or the violin. While some to alms most of us can barely stay afloat while dealing with health ,family situations and of course school work.
Students just as dedicated to their education like Azana, Feel the heat of the kitchen while applying to colleges.
Azana Reed of school of the Arts , Said:“I already stress enough and fall behind without having a part time job”“I do a thing or two every now and then to try and get experience but I try not to tie myself to a commitment I won’t be able to accomplish and follow through with”

Sadly there are just as many cons to having a part time job,
Falling behind in school work and starting bad habits such as drinking or smoking just to deal with the stress to name a few.
“Many students and friends of mine struggle with this same issue, not the alcohol or smocking but The Stress” Said Reyes “The only thing stopping me from working a part time job would have to be school, my course load can get intense at times and I really can’t afford to fall behind”

Having a part time job can be a positive experience, many part time jobs are hands on and can give your teenager some real insight onto a couple of things that they dont teach at school.

For example learning how to build their credit and save money. While also learning responsibility from paying bills, Budgeting is one of the best lessons they could learn specially early on so it becomes a staple for their financial growth.
“Everyone's situations is different, some work by choice or for necessity… sometimes both
in my experience I’ve had to learn how to balance my life as a part time working student and It's hard sometimes ” Fick said, modestly “I do fall behind in coursework and at school but I work twice as hard to get where I want to be and if that means juggling between school and work then that's what i’ll have to do to support myself .”

Placing them in a real social situation, or at least one that isn't filled with hormones and angst. Observing an adult deal with a situation like an unruly customer can teach them discipline.
It’s like learning piano at an early age, it becomes as easy as breathing unlike
trying to learn it when you become older becomes increasingly harder not impossible but definitely much more difficult due to the brain finishing its developmental stage at the age 25.

It’s can be rewarding like any good new experience but it can also have repercussions,
Some do it for the money, others for the experience while a few don’t really have a choice and can’t. Success and knowledge doesn't come for those who wait but Since when did Good enough become the opposite.

  25. Mystery Meat Chaos,Debate On School Lunches
    By Diamond Williams

School lunches has been a problem for ages. From the “Mystery Meat’ to the soft apples, school lunches has worsen over time. A lot of students either bring lunch of don’t eat at all. School lunches have been a problem since I first started school. When Michelle Obama became first Lady , she passed a movement to make school lunches healthier. School Kids are blaming Michelle Obama For their ‘Gross’ school lunches.

I went and interviewed a few student from School of The Arts, A local High school in Rochester Ny. They all had similar complaints and they all had a few comments on Michelle Obama healthy lunch movement. Tyjohnna Brown a senior at the high school says, “She never liked school lunches but they definitely were better in seventh grade. The only thing i would eat were the nachos and cookies and now we don't even have that. She also stated that she dont think they'll get any better so until graduation day she will bring lunch. Michelle Obama took white bread away everything’s wheat from the pizza to the ham sandwiches, There is no variety in the meals. Zanayia Hercules another senior at school of the arts had nothing but negative things to say about the school lunches. “ They’re disgusting!, I used to love when we would have the big salads and fresher fruit but now everything is inedible.” I asked her do she still eat the school lunches her response, “Only when I’m really hungry, otherwise I definitely would do without.

With Michelle out of the white house school lunches may go back. Tahtiannah Odum another senior stated, “The Food was already not that great please let it go back to decent,” School lunches have been a problem for years and student s have little to no hope that they will increase in taste. Hopefully lunches in 2018 will make a change for the better.

  26. The High Price of Senior Year

    By: Tevanna Maurer

A senior in high school will approximately spend $5,000 to $10,000. If they’re lucky they will have some financial help from parents or other family members but if not students have to pay for all these expenses on their own just to have an enjoyable last year of high school.
As an adult you might be thinking that for one year that isn’t that much money, and you’re not wrong either, but for teenagers the average yearly income is only around $10,000 meaning a student can spend their entire income just on school. Now, another thought you might have is that a student doesn’t have to be involved in everything which would then lead to a cheaper senior year but the most common things that just about every student pays is college applications, SAT’s, cap and gowns, and prom (or any other dances). Just those few things are over $1,000 and that’s if you’re cheap. If a student decides to go on their senior trip, buy the yearbook or senior apparel, class ring, senior pictures, or even a graduation party this is when the overall expense can easily reach $10,000.
The only nice thing about these expenses is that they’re spread out throughout the year so that the overall bill won’t do too much damage to these hard working students. If you’re lucky, you and/or your child can hopefully start saving up before their senior year shows up too fast.

  27. Cheerquality in SOTA
    (equality for cheerleaders)
Cheerleading is a very intense sport and most of the time it is very overlooked from others. People tend to believe that cheerleading is an easy sport and that anyone cold do it. Is that true? Absolutely not it is more than what you think it is. It's more than just jumping, screaming, and giving spirit it's more like a family.

The cheer coach for SOTA, Nicole Robinson was asked a number of questions:
    She was asked -
Could you tell me what it is like to be the cheer coach? She answered “frustrating, rewarding, stressful, funny”
What made you choose this sport to coach? “The students asked me but i didn't like the cheerleaders in high school.”
Do you feel that your sport gets treated equally? Why? “Not at all. We don't get ¼ of what other teams get”
How long have you been a cheer coach here? Has anything treatment wise changed throughout the years? “Several years. We used to get gym time and now we don't”
In what ways do you think the treatment for your team could improve? Provide examples. “ it could improve by giving us practice space, money spent on us, and for people to actually see us as a sport.”

One of the cheerleaders for SOTA, Julisa Quinones was asked questions also and she answered:
    She was asked -
How long have you been a cheerleader on this team? “It's about 4 years now.”
Could you tell me what is it like to be a cheerleader here? “It's something that i really do enjoy and you feel very welcome and cheering here has a great and family environment”
What made you choose cheerleading?”i always looked up to cheerleaders and how they are role models.also before i joined cheer i didn't know much and i wasn't very social but i gained so much from this experience.”
Do you do any other sport? If so name.how does it differ? “Yes volleyball. Its different from cheerleading because of the environment. In volleyball it has a more of competitive vibe and it's a more of we have to win sport. In cheerleading it has a more open and fun and family environment, even though at times it can get stressful i'm glad i know that my cheer sisters will always have my back”
What's your opinion on how cheerleaders are treated by the sports director and other teams? “I honestly feel cheer is treated differently from other sports like we don't get as much recognition as other sports and i wish we could get acknowledged more for like our cheer competitions and not many people actually come to the cheer competitions.”

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. How would you change some things that would help? What makes you thinks this would work? “Change peoples mind and show them that we are a sport and change their opinion to show them we are a sport and we don't just jump and smile and yell, but it's not all about that we also dance, and tumble, and stunt. And this would work because ever since i joined cheer i used to think like that and i no longer do it changed my opinion and it could change someone else's as well.”
The athletic director in SOTA, Dave Michelson was also asked a number of questions he answered them as:
What made you decide to be a sports director? “I have always had a passion for all sports and physical education as well as fitness and health and it is something that is very satisfying to me to be able to help other reach their fitness goals.”
Could you tell me in what ways you support the cheerleaders? “ making sure they have transportation to various places as well as making sure they have new equipment that they use for many things like practicing for competitions and stunting. In fact they also have brand new uniforms we have gotten this year.”
What do you think cheerleaders do? “Cheerleading has actually become a sport now , at one point it used to be known as a club activity. Now it is much more than that because of all the stunts the girls do and master. They spend allot of time practicing for competition and its no longer just where they go out and cheer on the boys at basketball games. So they spend a lot of time to prepare for competitions because there is a lot of competition in out area.”
In what ways do you feel cheerleading is important? “they helps generate a lot of spirit to teams especially our girls and boys basketball team at the games and it gets the crowd going and more involved in the game and its also a sport where the girls can achieve at a very high level based on the competitions they attend and they set team goals.”
In your honest opinion do you think you treat the cheerleaders the same way you would any other sports team? “Absolutely i have to know because like i said we are spending a lot of money on the sport and it would be to our best advantage to do so making sure they are prepared to go against other schools like ours. Make sure that we spend money in terms of facilities they could practice at and make sure they look great doing it and in their new uniforms.”

Overall between all of these interviews the opinions of the cheerleaders and coach were not the same as the answers given by the sports director. As you can see their answers were completely different but in some ways they were similar. The feelings of the cheer coach and the cheerleaders are how they do not feel like they are equal to the way other teams are treated and how they feel like they deserve better treatment and more support from both the faculty of SOTA and the students. Also on the other hand the sports director feels like he does the most he can for the cheerleaders but in fact does not really do all he can but some. Therefore sports in SOTA are not bad on the teams but are worse when it comes to the treatment of outside faculty.

Cultural Appropriation : Is It Appropriate?

Cultural appropriation is the act of someone from one culture adopting elements of another culture placing these elements within their own.In some instances this can have a deep effect on certain aspects degrading their meaning. Is this ok? There is a thin line between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation. When people from a certain culture are deprived of opportunities to control or benefit from their cultural material, it becomes wrong and comes off as disrespectful and the act should not continue. When people borrow elements from another cultures and fail to acknowledge their sources and compensate them, this can be categorized as cultural appropriation.

In some instances people tend to appreciate one’s culture and are able to recognize who and where the ideas originate from without trying to make it their own or interfere with the actual purpose of a certain aspect within this culture. These are the instances where people feel it is ok to adapt elements of a another culture. As long as one is not trying to take away meaning or importance away from a culture, they should not be seen in a negative light. As said by a classmate , “ Enjoying another person's culture is different from trying to take their same ideas and display it as your own”

The cases where people tend to participate in other cultures without realizing the origin, is where problem may occurs. It is unfair to want to be involved in one's culture, but use its aspects without any recognition of who you are adopting them from. Not realizing you are appropriating someone’s culture is one thing , but in other instances many people understand that an ideal did not originate from their culture and continue to use it as if it were. The worst part of it all is many people who “borrow” customs from other cultures are at times praised while people from that originating culture are looked down upon. For instance something as simple as cornrows or braids were created in and around the black community , and there is nothing wrong with people of other races wearing them, but how is it that when some black people wear them they are seen as “ghetto” while other races, while wearing them , are seen as exotic and different. It is ok to appreciate and participate in aspects within other cultures that you do not reside , but when you do so ,do not try to make it your own and forget the source from which the ideals came

  29. Read This Story before judging another Pitbull

November 22nd 2017, 11 year old Javien Casteliano was brutally mauled to death by two pit bulls. January 17 2017 Logan Bratz is brutally mauled by up to three pit bulls as he is walking to his bus stop to get to school. Stories like these have been making mainstream headlines a; year. And there are two similarities to these. They both involve pit bulls. Not only are pit bulls involved, their involvements in these attacks are heavily exaggerated. But why is that? Why are pit bulls perceived as monstrous dogs? Are pit bulls a good pet to have?
Let’s start with the basics. The “Pit bull” isn’t a dog breed at all. This is a slang given to the animals by people who do not know the creatures well. In this article I “Pit bull” will be referring to the American Pitbull Terrier. The actual name of the breed is the American Pitbull Terrier. Malcolm Gladwell who wrote the essay Troublemakers sums up the stereotype “Pitbull” beautifully stating” Pit-bull bans involve a category problem, too, because pit bulls, as it happens, aren’t a single breed. The name refers to dogs belonging to a number of related breeds, such as the American Staffordshire terrier, the Staffordshire bull terrier, and the American pit bull terrier—all of which share a square and muscular body, a short snout, and a sleek, short-haired coat. Means big, nasty, scary dog that bites.” So what does that mean? It means you are looking at three different types of dog breeds. Most of the dogs involved in attacks are mixed with other breeds of dogs. That means that the American Pitbull Terrier is not the only culprit to blame for dog bites. In the case of Logan Bratz none of the dogs involved were an American Pitbull Terrier. One was a pit-bull mix and one was a border collie, not a Pitbull at all. That is what most people believe. So we have the media helping discourage an entire dog breed for the actions of about 10 different breeds. To put it into perspective say you have 10 countries that are similar in appearance. One countries’ people are notorious for being drunk. The countries name is the Billians. But since all 10 of the countries people look similar they are branded as being drunks. The same thing happens to the pit-bull

    ReplyDelete
  30. We also have to look at the myths that are associated with the breed. First and foremost THERE ISNT AN ANIMAL ON THIS PLANET THAT CAN LOCK THERE JAW. The term “Lock Jaw” is a myth. There is nothing in their genetic makeup or physical makeup that allows pit bulls to lock their jaws. Pit bulls like any other dog have tremendous bite force which would give the illusion of a locked jaw. If you look at the personality traits of the pit-bull determination is one of them. That means that once a pit-bull has its mind set on something it’s going to finish the job to its fullest extent. So when a dog bites something it won’t let go until the job is done. Another myth is that pit bulls are inherently aggressive. Any living thing no matter what species inherits emotion. If your father was a real happy guy, you can become a real sad person. Aggression is not something that can be passed down, it is classified as an emotion.
But why do pit bulls or any dog attack in the first place? The Pitbull aggression comes from how the owner treats the dog. If an animal is caged it will eventually attack a human. We see this all the time in zoos. When an animal is released from caged or terrible living environments, it will react the only way it knows how….. Attacking. How the pit bull is raised is also a factor. For most of the pit bull attacks the victims were people who stepped onto the pit bull’s yard or territory. These dogs were raised by a person who raised the dog’s as guard dogs. The person may not have intended for the pit bull to perceive it that way, but remember pit bulls are animals. They do not comprehend things like a human does. So these pit bulls were territorial and saw any stranger as a threat. For the dogs that ran up on people these were dogs that were most likely caged up. It’s the human’s responsibly to make sure the dog doesn’t become overly aggressive.

The media has also helped in portraying pit bulls as monstrous breeds. I started my article with two stories. I found these stories of a site called dogbites.org. In a nutshell this site is 100% against pit bulls. (Link below) But they are also a great resource. This site has every pit-bull attack that has happened since 1990. They get their stories directly off of news websites. What I found funny was that each of the stories headlines in bold letters read Pitbull attacks boy or Pitbull attacks girl. They over emphasize the fact that pit bulls were involved in the attack. Isabelle Dinoire the woman famous for getting a face transplant after her dog mauled her. On every website I saw this story on it read “after her dog attacked her”. They never reveal the breed of the dog. They just say the dog. A little sleuthing and I find out the dog responsible was a Labrador retriever. Yes America’s dog tore a woman’s face off, causing her to get a face transplant. She has since died after taking medications that caused her to get two different types of cancers. All because America’s favorite dog tore her face off. Even more irony, she was the dog’s owner. But where’s the headline Labrador retriever mauls owner face off. We don’t see it. A 7 year old Highland girl was attacked by a dog. The headline says nothing about the dog’s breed. All it says is “dog could be wolf hybrid”. While looking at that story I saw a ink to another story that read “Dog attacked by pit-bull”. Right in the open, no sugar coating it at all.

  34. Behind the scene: Theatre
    By: Tay’Von Jackson

Ever wondered what really goes on behind the scenes, when putting together a theatre production?

Many people go and watch shows to support their children or people they know, as a date or simply because they just love theatre. At the end of the show they stand and give a standing ovation to the wonder talent that they just witnessed, but what they don’t know is what it took to get the production to performance level.

It can be a very stressful process from a student or the performers perspective. “You have to learn how to be comfortable with whatever role your in and you have to be able to work with other people,” says Nye’Asia Simmons, a student involved in multiple SOTA productions. Most of the time you are cast with a group of people that you barely know or sometimes don't even know at all. So in order to make it an effective show you must embody the characters emotionally and work hard to make those connections with the other actors. Which is the same with memorizing lines of a script. You have to dedicate most of your time and work hard to keep practicing until you have them entirely memorized.

Here at School of The Arts fo any student who wants to be apart extracurriculars, such as the theatre productions, one must maintain good, passing grades. In order to have a good, productive show you need to have everyone play their parts whether it's the actors, pit crew or tech crew. SOTA student Nye’Asia Simmons says, “Some hardships that you face are losing really, really, really important characters right before a show opens, thats a big hit to the show.”

A more positive point of view, are the forever lasting memories and unexpected, life long friends that you make. “My favorite memory during Mary Poppins was when Mia pushed a boy in the pit,” says SOTA student Gustin Cook, who played bass in the pit. Whether their good or bad you still walk away with memories that you will always remember. Many of the performs and crew walk away talking to people they have never said a word to before the show and end the end leave with friends that have impacted their lives in a good way.

    The Real Life Of Bullying

The question of what actions constitute bullying and harassment is really only determined in the eyes of the bully. If the prey feels that they have been treated in a way that is demeaning and unacceptable, then they have grounds for prey. Legally, the intention of the person who carried out the action is seen as irrelevant. Also when a bully feels threatened ,or feels the need to show off they feel the need to pick on other people. What some people don't know that a bully pick on people for a few reasons troubles going on at home , the bully has anger built up inside. The Republic Act 10627 or the Anti Bullying Act of 2013 was signed into law by Former President Benigno Aquino III on September 6, 2013. The law requires all elementary and secondary schools in the country to adopt an anti-bullying policy.

One news stories i had caught were interview from Kevin Rosario. to start off with Kevin's interview. I ask him a series of questions. I asked “how did bullying change you?” , “how do you think bullies should be punished” , and what was a bullying experience you will always remember?”. As for Kevin he says quote “bullying doesn't affect me anymore”. Coming from a person and hearing that he has been a victim of a lot of bullying and harassment to the point it doesn't bother him anymore. How do you get bullied to the point where you're numb to it? Very crazy. He suggests that bullies should be “suspended or expelled” although even though those don't quite work bringing in the law anti bullying can turn into someone being a criminal. An experience kevin would definitely always remember is the time a student from a local elementary school lied on him just so the bully of the class can make a scene and embarrass him and just to start up issues but he remembered it was so bad that he would go home and cry from all the names he was called. But also as bad as he would get bullied for just being around.. Now in days anti-bullying law is part of its criminal code. ... As a result of the lack of guidance or mandates.

How does social media take a role in bullying?

See here's the thing in 2017 there's so many electronics and there's so many ways to hide the secrets and bad things that go on the internet but number one thing you can hide is criticism , bullying , and debating. Social media Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place over digital devices like cell phones, computers, and tablets. Cyberbullying can occur through SMS, Text, and apps, or online in social media, forums, or gaming where people can view, participate in, or share content. Cyberbullying includes sending, posting, or sharing negative, harmful, false, or mean content about someone else. It can include sharing personal or private information about someone else causing embarrassment or humiliation. Some cyberbullying crosses the line into unlawful or criminal behavior. Literally it can happen on Facebook , Snapchat , Twitter , Instagram etc. it's threatening and hurtful as much as saying it in person it hurts over the internet too. It has its advantages a rumor or a picture of someone can spread faster over the internet than it can live in person. It takes on click one group send and boom you're exposed and out and talked about it's that quick and easy so yes cyberbullying has a huge role with bullying it's just that you're behind a screen. Now in days we have consequences for cyberbullying which refers to civil penalties, such as school intervention via suspensions and/or expulsions, to jail time for criminal misdemeanors and even felonies.

    1. The real life of bullying

I really appreciate how you took the time to talk about such an important subject that honestly does not get talked about enough in schools. It just gets brushed off with a warning to the bully and no promise to protect the person being bullied. I know what I'm talking about from personal experience, bullying is the worst thing that can happen to some kids. I was lucky enough that I had a lot of supports in my life to help me through it.

  36. Students left outside in the cold before school starts
    By: Anessa Gonzalez

Students in school of the arts who catch busses or walk, often have to wait outside in the cold before entering school.

Usually last year the doors opened at exactly 7:00 but this year, the administrators have been taking their time opening the doors, while it can be snowing or windy and very cold.

These students can get sick if they aren't able to buy proper clothing for the winter time. Also, if it is raining students come in the school soaking wet and possibly get sick and pass those germs on to other students.

Students of school of the arts believe that it is unfair and inhumane to leave them outside while administrators are warm inside.
A student at school of the arts named Darla says “I come late so I don't have to deal with that but I still feel like its a problem and we don't want anyone dying in the school”.
When asked “how do you feel about standing outside in the mornings before school?” Carlos ; a student at school of the arts; says “ I feel bad , it's not something I like to experience.”
Jordan at school of the arts says “ I believe that it makes many people sick and it's wrong. We should be let into the school when everyone starts arriving”.

When a faculty member was asked this same question, he responded “ I believe that students should be let into the building if its below 40 degrees or if its raining”.

Students and faculty both disagree with this inhumane act during the morning times at school of the arts. This act is wrong and should be changed.

  37. The reality of being a senior

A lot of seniors before senior year can’t wait to be seniors to graduate. They believe it is stress free and the easiest year before graduation.

That is not the case. Even though classes are easy but getting to graduate and finding colleges can be very stressful for students who don’t know what they will do after college or for others looking for a job can be hard enough. Also paying for things that are required can also be stressful.

My experience with being a senior has mixed for feelings for the grade. Like the classes are fun because I don’t much work do for each and I have a pretty easy schedule with a couple of advisements to relax and get homework done. But I can very stressed out with the responsibility with making sure I have all the requirements that meet the needs to graduate. First is making sure that I have all my credits to graduate or the required amount of community service that I also need. The thing that gets me stressed out the most is looking for colleges to go into after i graduate as well. The last thing that can make things very stressful is the cost of what you need like yearbook, prom, my cap and gown and much more.

A lot of seniors are missing classes and regents that they need to graduate. Some of them don’t have the required amounts credits and that can be hard for them as well because you need a required amount of credits to walk the stage. It can be tons of fun but not always. Do not go into senior year thinking it’s going to be easy to get through because all lot of times in won’t be and you will be finding someone to help you out. That is the reality of being a senior.

  38. Behind the scenes of SENIORS

Senior year has its ups and downs. Students often go through frustrations , fear, social changes , and economic issues. When you become a senior you take on so many responsibilities. You have to prepare for college with such things such as SAT and ACT. In addition there's a huge amount of expenses that must be made. Based upon my own knowledge ; cap and gown , year book , senior pictures , prom , and senior apparel all must be paid for. Senior year is full of expenses and many changes. Does it cross your mind that you may not ever see your friends you have now? This is also something many fear. Majority of your friends you have will be far away. A student from School Of the Arts in Rochester New York , answered a few questions on this subject. One being about her feelings towards the separation. “ It's sad I hope I will be able to at least see them on holidays”, she says.

Frustrations is also something students face senior year. “ It's a lot of stress and pressure put upon us”. These words were from another student that attends school of the arts in, Rochester , New York. Students face a lot of pressure as far as maintaining grades while going through the college application process. Acceptance plays a huge role in the stress obtained . There are so many colleges that you wish to attend and are clueless of the outcome. Majority of the people say senior year is not what they expected. The year will be over with a blink of an eye, and you’ll be walking across the stage. Before you know it you're going to be in college . Make use out of the time you have and and enjoy it to the fullest.

  39. Students share their feelings when it comes to growing up in poverty.
    Helena Fick

Research shows that students that grow up in poverty have a lot more problems than just financial ones.

About 15 million children are subjected to poverty in the united states. That’s 21% of all kids are subjected to poverty. That doesn't mean the child’s parents are unemployed, in fact a majority of them are employed but make enough money to support them or their kids. Others don’t have families to support them in the first place.

The National Center for Children in Poverty did reasearch and found that poverty can “impede children’s ability to learn and contribute to social, emotional and behavioral problems.” Growing up in poverty can affect how a child learns, and how they use that knowledge. It can also give children health and mental health problems.

A survey was conducted and found that most people who felt they lived in poverty felt that they have missed out on many oppurtunities. They also find themselves easily upset over their parents money problems. The survey also concluded that the majority of people who stated they grew up in poverty have some sort of mental disorder, or learning disability.

Coincidence? Definitely not. Children who are subjected to low income households struggle more than just finding a way to get food on the table. They struggle with mental and physical problems. Kids are the future. Our future is being plagued by economic problems and will they ever stop? Probably not.

  44. SENIOR YEAR...NOT WHAT IT SEEMS

SENIOR YEAR IS FULL OF SURPRISES

When it comes to Senior year most students are not prepared for what is to come. A large amount of people think that senior year is going all laid back with little to no homework, turns out that is not the case. Senior year is actually filled with stress. Some reasons why there is so much stress is that the students are worried about their life after high school and the amount of work that they need to complete in order to achieve their goal. Senior year also cost a lot of money. SAT’s and college applications tend to cost around $50 they can easily though go up to $100. This does not even include the cost of prom, senior pictures, textbooks, apparel, traveling for college visits, the list goes on and on. Most people are also stressed out because they are becoming adults. As many people have been told before; “ life flashes by in a blink of an eye”. Seniors are also stressing out because they are not sure if college is right for them or not.

    HOW STRESS CAN BE AVOIDED

Most students tend to not do stress relieving things during the school year. They mostly ignore the stress or they find their own way of relieving with the stress. Some students go to social media, watch movies, listen to music, read books, being in a relationship, having a daily log, the list goes on and on. This stress can also lead to bullying; if someone is very stressful they feel as if nobody understands what they are going through and use bullying as their stress relief. Their tend to be many ways people can deal with stress it is only a matter of how efficient they are with dealing with it.

    COLLEGE

To get to the final event...college. College is arguably the largest stress inducing topic throughout senior year. Whether it is you have not started your college applications You did not get a high enough grade on the SAT, or you do not even know what you want to study at college. When asked if college was stressing her out Helena replied; “Yes...yeah, definitely”(Helena Fick 2017). As you can tell college is stressful for not only this individual but this statement can be said by a lot of other students that are in this same predicament.

  46. Discrimination:
    Feeding on the web.
    -by Melina E. Santiago (November 29, 2017)

The United States of America has had disturbingly high rates of racial discrimination and prejudice for years, and it hasn’t taken a vacation.

For centuries the U.S. has been not only a melting pot of cultures, but also a cauldron of discrimination, prejudice, and hatred. When asked if she has ever faced discrimination due to her race, Georgia born Melinda Santiago responds with “That’s a dumb question, of course I have. It’s been happening all my life.”

Despite existing for as long as humans themselves, discrimination has begun to intensify due to the popularity of social media. Many platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, YouTube and others have been an outlet for people to express their opinions, beliefs, and themselves; However, this can be both a good and a bad thing

On one hand, social media can be used to keep in touch with friends and distant relatives, to watch funny videos and laugh over a few memes, and to read articles on the hottest celebrity gossip. However, when put into the wrong hands, it can be used to spread hateful messages and ideas, and to tweet things that could cause an uproar in a country. With all of the posts promoting self love, equality and acceptance, there is an equal amount promoting hate, discrimination and exclusion. While it is true that we all have the world at our fingertips, it is also true that there are some using it for good, and some for evil.

  47. Study shows how easily people get offended
When it comes to even slightly controversial topics, people get offended easily. Including bumper stickers which appear all around the city, where people can express things they support. Although there are certain bumper stickers regarding abortion, politics, and womens rights which rile people up.
86% of people said one sticker that read "abortion doesn't make you unpregnant, it makes you the mother of a dead baby" made them uncomfortable. Many who disagreed with this sticker said that they lean more towards womens choice for abortion. One woman who wished to stay anonymous yelled "Abortion is a sin! It is murder!" People who heard this comment got upset and started coming up to her with loud voices and responded by yelling as well. Later on, the people began to get physical and the police were called.
Communication like this has shown to not be effective. While many people disagree, there is no way for people to forcibly remove the stickers.

  48. Hard Realities of Senior Year
    Ellie Sklair

Students going into their Senior Year, have lots of hopes, and expectations but as the year progresses, their hopes are crushed. Senior year asks a lot of students, hundreds of dollars spent of college applications and SAT’s. Those expenses don’t include, Prom, cap and gown, and senior apparel. Senior Tevanna Maurer says, “I never expected how much money would go into senior year. Probably by the end of the year with SAT’s, sending scores, senior apparel, senior photos and everything else, I’m spending over 300 dollars, maybe more.” Not only is senior year taking a toll on our wallet, it tends of effect our social interaction.

Since 7th grade, the School of the Arts seniors, have been together, and knew that they would be continuing their education into the next grade. Senior year, means this is last year of fimiliarity. In a year, you’ll be in a new school, most likely new home, and a different group of people. This tends to have a social stress on certain seniors. An anoynomous senior stated, “This year, there is an added stress on students and their surrounding. You know this is going to your last year, with them so you want to make it worth it, but you also are so in your own world, that it’s so easy not to have any social interactions outside of class.”

In an added stress for senior year, there are some fears that the students typically have. A senior at SOTA says, “Senior year gives me many fears, I don’t know if I will get accepted into college, or even I am choosing the right major for myself. This year puts a lot of doubt in myself, and my future.”

All in All, senior year is just one big question mark on how your future is going to turn out, and if you’re ever going to have money in your wallet again.

  52. Life As A Middle Schooler: The Inside Scoop
    By Danisha Rodriguez

For many, middle school is a life changing experience, often becoming nerve-racking at some points. It is often very hard to go from a routine that you are used to going through every day to having to adapt to a completely new routine. This brings about many changes, some minor as well as major changes.

From my experience in middle school, I definitely went through some changes that I would say developed who I am as a person. For one, I had to learn how to adjust to my new environment. It was very difficult for me because I was used to seeing the same faces every day in the same classroom for 8 hours, something that I came to realize was different at SOTA. Each day, I was introduced to new people and teachers, allowing me to be able to get out of my comfort zone and make new friends with people that I was not used to seeing every day.

For 8th grader Justin Rodriguez, this process of having to adjust was relatively easy but brought some challenges that he had to overcome. When asked about what his transition from 6th grade to 7th grade was like, he said, “Sixth grade was a crazy but awesome year. I was surrounded by people that I grew up, so I was very comfortable around them. Once I got to SOTA, I became a little nervous because I was surrounded by new people. This made me realize that I had to be careful with what I said in order to make a good impression.” Besides making new friends and adjusting to the new school, he mentioned having to deal with his physical changes. “One of the most challenging things that I have one through so far is having to deal with my voice change. Because I am a vocal major, I had to become used to singing tenor and bass rather than alto, which is what I sung before my voice changed. I would say that this is one of the things that I am still getting used to.” Despite these challenges that he went through, he felt that his family was of big support. “I feel that my family was very helpful in guiding me through these changes because of the fact that they had gone through it with my sister (which is you), so they already knew what to expect and how to help.”

Our middle school years are often looked over and seen as the “easiest years” that we will go through, but besides senior year, middle school can bring its own difficult challenges that cause us all to adjust and learn new things not just about other people, but ourselves as well.

The Impacts of Cliques in School Life

When it comes to high school cliques, many students don’t even realize they are a part of them. They become a normal part of everyone’s school life, many not interfering with each other.

In movies and shows cliques are portrayed in an unrealistic and exaggerated manner, while at SOTA, they consist of people from every major that stick together. Being one of the better city schools in the Rochester City School District, School of the Arts doesn’t have many groups like Bullies and Jocks. Everyone is able to express themselves freely and feel accepted, because of how many different personalities are in SOTA.

Students believe there are some bad and good things to the cliques in school. Student Zanayia Hercules said “They make you connect with people you have a lot in common with, but cliques who believe they are better than everyone else and look better are a problem and can be bullies.” When asked how do you feel about cliques Allayzia said “I think it natural to be attracted to people with similar interest and styles to you, but we shouldn’t separate ourselves from others.” Remy from school of the arts also said “Cliques helps the social reality of school.”

When a teacher, Ms. Manetta, was asked this same question, she responded “Everyone seems to get along, all though I do see some students who are to themselves. I feel like groups have a comforting effect, making people feel like a family.”

Overall cliques leave an impact on our everyday school lives that we don’t notice. Who we talk to in the morning or outside of certain classes all matters on which you are in cliques or consider good friends.
